No cloud to trap the day's warmth tonight, with just enough WSW wind to ripple the surface and steady pressure. The water to cover at Mud Lake is the first drop-off and weed lines. A broad window opens from afternoon into evening. Commit to the pattern once the first fish shows. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Mud Lake stands in Guysborough County, Nova Scotia. It sits 6.5 km in from the sea. It covers about 2 hectares, so this is small water you can walk round in under an hour. On size it sits at the modest end of our Guysborough County list. Antigonish is the closest place, 53 km off. Port Hawkesbury is 62 km and Louisdale 76 km. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
Depth went unrecorded, which puts the reading back on you. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Guysborough County records list alewife, American eel, brook trout, Atlantic salmon and blueback herring among the fish reported. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. Mud Lake responds to conditions more than to tactics.
Averages here run 18°C at the top of summer and -6°C at the bottom of winter. The year splits cleanly: hard water, then open water. After mid April the shallows warm and the fish move up. Break-up near mid April, freeze-up near late December: that is the shape of an average year. Look to early summer and the first cool weeks of autumn. On Mud Lake the same rules apply, with local timing.
Our records carry no access rule either way. The map shows no ramp or car park nearby, so this is a walk-in water. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Bank access can be seasonal on ground like this. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. Cains Lake sits 0.8 km off and takes the overflow. What applies at Mud Lake may have changed since it was mapped.
