Solid cloud cover today, with light air out of the WSW and no real change in pressure. Give windblown banks where food collects the first hour at MacDonald Lake. The best of it runs the day. Push the good hours hard and rest through the dead ones. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Look for MacDonald Lake in the Colchester part of Nova Scotia. The country here is mixed forest. This is a pocket water of some 4 hectares, and every part of it is reachable from the bank. Compared with other Nova Scotia water on our list, it sits high. Bible Hill lies 22 km from the water. For a city, Dartmouth is 97 km off. The county line runs close by, so rules can change within a short drive.
There is no published depth for this one, so start shallow and work out. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Survey and observation records for Colchester include Atlantic salmon, striped bass, brook trout, American eel and white sucker. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. The shape of MacDonald Lake decides where the fish sit.
Expect July to average close to 18°C, with January the cold end at about -8°C. A hard winter is normal, and the thaw brings a strong few weeks. Once it clears, about late April, the fishing comes on quickly. In an average year the thaw lands around late April and the freeze near mid December. The shoulder weeks of the open season are the productive ones. Plan around that when you fish MacDonald Lake.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. Nothing formal is recorded here: no ramp, no car park, no marked path. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. Some ground is open by custom rather than by right, so tread carefully. If the gate is shut, Cranberry Lake at 1.5 km is the nearest alternative. Where MacDonald Lake is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
