Stars out and no cloud tonight, with a whisper of wind from the ESE and no real change in pressure. The water to cover at Long Lake is windblown banks where food collects. The useful hours run the day. Trust the forecast and stay out through the window. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

Long Lake sits within Halifax Regional Municipality in Nova Scotia. Salt water lies 18 km off. With some 70 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. Some 8.9 km of bank gives room to move when the wind turns. Size puts it in the front rank of our Halifax Regional Municipality list. Start from Stellarton, 57 km down the road. The big place round here is Dartmouth, 106 km distant. The nearest boundary is a fair way off.
Depth is unmeasured here, so let the shoreline guide you. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Reported across Halifax Regional Municipality: brook trout, alewife and rainbow smelt. Protected fish appear in the records for this area, so treat the list as information, not an invitation. Anyone new to Long Lake should walk it once before setting up.
The year swings from about -6°C in February to roughly 18°C in August. Fishing here follows the temperature more than the calendar. Once it clears, about mid April, the fishing comes on quickly. The season between ice runs from about mid April to mid December. Just after the ice goes and just before it returns, the fishing lifts. Expect Long Lake to follow that timing.
The access position is unclear from public sources. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. No launch point is recorded nearby, so this is a bank water unless you carry a boat in. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Ask in the nearest town if you are unsure. Keep proof of licence with you rather than in the car. Should this one be busy, Hot Lake is 2.3 km off. Rules at Long Lake are worth checking on the day.
