Cloud from horizon to horizon today, with a faint SSE drift and pressure sitting still. The fish at Long Lake are likely to sit near points where shallow meets deep. Expectations low today; if anything moves, it will be in the night. Lower the pace and stay patient. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Look for Long Lake in Colchester, Nova Scotia. It sits in pine and birch country. At 3 hectares it is the sort of place you fish for an evening rather than a day. By elevation it is in the upper part of our Nova Scotia listings. Debert is the closest town at 17 km. Dartmouth is the closest city, 102 km away. Being near a boundary, it pays to know which side you are fishing.
Depth is not on record here, which means reading the ground instead. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Across Colchester, recorded fish include Atlantic salmon, striped bass, brook trout, American eel and white sucker. Protected fish appear in the records for this area, so treat the list as information, not an invitation. The shape of Long Lake decides where the fish sit.
Averages move between -8°C in January and 17°C in July. Fishing here follows the temperature more than the calendar. Count on hard cover from midwinter, and open water from late April. Going by climate averages, expect open water from about late April until roughly early December. The first weeks of open water and the last are the ones to plan for. Long Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Nothing in the way of made access shows up nearby: no ramp, no car park, no path. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Provincial rules still apply whatever the bank status. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. Shatter Lake at 0.5 km is the sensible second choice. Ask locally about Long Lake if anything is unclear.
