A grey, even sky over the water, with a whisper of wind from the ESE and no real change in pressure. Expect most activity at Head Lake around inflow corners and shaded margins. A long productive spell runs the day. Make the first hour count and build on it. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

You will find Head Lake in Guysborough County, Nova Scotia. Salt water lies 14 km off. With some 58 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. Some 7.2 km of bank gives room to move when the wind turns. Few waters listed in Guysborough County are bigger. Antigonish sits 45 km from here and is the nearest stop. After that come Port Hawkesbury at 59 km and Stellarton at 72 km. No boundary runs near, so the local rules hold throughout.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. County-wide records name alewife, American eel, brook trout, Atlantic salmon and blueback herring. Protected fish appear in the records for this area, so treat the list as information, not an invitation. On Head Lake the quiet end is the one worth the extra effort.
August is the warm end of the year here, averaging about 18°C, while February sits near -6°C. A solid cap is the normal state through winter. Ice is part of the season here, ending near late April. From about late April to around late December, expect open water on the long-run figures. The strong weeks are the first after break-up and the last before the freeze. Expect Head Lake to follow that timing.
Whether you may fish here is not something records settle. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Nothing in the way of made access shows up nearby: no ramp, no car park, no path. Provincial rules still apply whatever the bank status. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. If the gate is shut, Bull Ridge Lake at 1.7 km is the nearest alternative. Where Head Lake is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
