Heavy overcast holding through the day, with a kind ESE breeze on the water with a settled glass. Most of the action on Flat Lake should come off structure within a cast of the bank. A long productive spell runs the day. Make the first hour count and build on it. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

In Nova Scotia, Flat Lake falls inside Halifax Regional Municipality. Beyond the shoreline you have pine and birch. Small even by pond standards, it rewards one careful line. It is a small entry by Halifax Regional Municipality standards. Herring Cove lies 4 km from the water. Green Acres follows at 5.2 km, then Thornhill at 6.2 km. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.
No published figure covers depth, so learn it as you fish. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. County-wide records name brook trout, alewife, rainbow smelt, American eel and Atlantic salmon. Protected fish appear in the records for this area, so treat the list as information, not an invitation. Read Flat Lake before you fish it and the day goes better.
The range across the year is -5°C to 18°C. Winter closes the water for a while, and the reopening is worth catching. Ice is part of the season here, ending near mid April. On average, mid April opens the water and late December closes it again. The first weeks of open water and the last are the ones to plan for. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Flat Lake.
We hold no note on access for this one. Mapping is blank for access, so scout the approach before committing the car. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. Mud Lake, 0.5 km away, makes the obvious fallback. For Flat Lake, the notice at the access point is the final word.
