Soft grey light all day today, with a whisper of wind from the E and pressure going nowhere. Fish at Elbow Lake should hold close to the calm side of the wind. The night carries the best of the day. Fish tidy and take what the day gives. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

Elbow Lake sits in Pictou County, out in Nova Scotia. Beyond the shoreline you have mixed forest. It runs to roughly 13 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. Roughly 2.6 km of bank means you can walk to a fresh area when one goes quiet. Supplies mean a trip to Antigonish, 34 km off. Stellarton follows at 40 km, then New Glasgow at 40 km. The county line runs close by, so rules can change within a short drive.
Depth is not on record here, which means reading the ground instead. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Pictou County records list American eel, rainbow smelt, alewife and Atlantic salmon among the fish reported. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. At Elbow Lake light and wind decide more than tackle does.
Long-term averages put August at about 18°C and February near -7°C. A hard winter is normal, and the thaw brings a strong few weeks. Count the season from break-up, usually late April. Average temperatures cross freezing around late April in spring and again near mid December in autumn. The open run goes from the thaw to the freeze, and April through October covers most of it. On Elbow Lake that shapes the whole year.
We have no record of the rules that apply on this bank. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. No made access is recorded, so a short walk in is the likely arrangement. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. Long Lake, 1 km away, makes the obvious fallback. None of that is settled for Elbow Lake in what we hold.
