Soft grey light all day today, with a gentle ripple from the SE and no real change in pressure. Give reed fringes and open pockets the first hour at Duck Lake. The strongest window is the evening. Make the first hour count and build on it. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Duck Lake lies within the bounds of Colchester, Nova Scotia. The ground around here is pine and birch. It covers about 5 hectares, so this is small water you can walk round in under an hour. It is high ground by Nova Scotia standards. Bible Hill lies 19 km from the water. The nearest city of size is Dartmouth, 91 km away. The boundary is near enough that local access rules are worth double-checking.
No figure exists for depth, so let the water show you. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. County-wide records name Atlantic salmon, striped bass, brook trout, American eel and white sucker. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. The near bank of Duck Lake is often the one people ignore.
Between January at about -8°C and July at about 18°C, the water has a wide range to work through. The middle months are generous; the ends are demanding. The lid usually goes in late April, which opens the strongest weeks of the year. The season between ice runs from about late April to mid December. June through September is the settled part of the year, with the shoulders busier for fish. The season on Duck Lake follows the weather closely.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. Nothing in the way of made access shows up nearby: no ramp, no car park, no path. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Some banks are open only from a marked point. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. Mud Lake at 1 km is the sensible second choice. Rules at Duck Lake are worth checking on the day.
