Heavy overcast holding through the day, with an easy breeze from the SW and steady pressure. Most of the action on Dry Lake should come off any hard bottom among the soft. The day fishes best from night into morning. Fish confidently and change only when the bites stop. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Dry Lake is one of the Halifax Regional Municipality waters in Nova Scotia. Country round the bank runs to mixed forest. The water covers some 26 hectares, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. The full circuit measures close to 2.4 km on foot. For a base, Stewiacke sits 25 km out. It is 63 km to Dartmouth, the nearest city. The county line runs close by, so rules can change within a short drive.
Depth went unrecorded, which puts the reading back on you. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Species logged across Halifax Regional Municipality include brook trout, alewife, rainbow smelt and American eel. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. On Dry Lake that means starting tight and working out.
Climate normals give 18°C for July and -7°C for January. Cold locks it up for a good stretch each year. Break-up comes around mid April, and the run that follows is short and strong. On the long-run averages the water opens up around mid April and starts locking again about mid December. Look to early summer and the first cool weeks of autumn. Expect Dry Lake to follow that timing.
No access rule appears in what we hold. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. There is no mapped parking or launch nearby, which keeps numbers down. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. Sort the permit out before you load the car. Keep proof of licence with you rather than in the car. Failing this one, try Little Lake, 3.7 km away. Ask locally about Dry Lake if anything is unclear.
