No direct sun expected today, with light air out of the SE and pressure going nowhere. Activity on Cranberry Lake should centre on the margins and the shelf beyond them. The strongest window is the evening. Make the first hour count and build on it. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Look for Cranberry Lake in the Halifax Regional Municipality part of Nova Scotia. Everything around it is lake country bush. At roughly 8 hectares, the whole thing is within casting reach of a single walk. Beaver Bank sits 7.1 km from the bank. For a city, Dartmouth is 25 km off. The line between counties passes nearby, which can change who manages the water.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Reported across Halifax Regional Municipality: brook trout, alewife and rainbow smelt. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. Cranberry Lake repays a walk before the first cast.
Seasonal averages run from -6°C in January up to 18°C in August. A hard winter is normal, and the thaw brings a strong few weeks. The lid usually goes in mid April, which opens the strongest weeks of the year. In an average year the thaw lands around mid April and the freeze near mid December. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. Cranberry Lake runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
Our records carry no access rule either way. Mapping records no facilities at all near this water. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Some banks are open only from a marked point. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. For a change of water, Sandy Lake is 1.5 km distant.
