Low, flat cloud sitting over the water, with mild air moving in from the ESE and pressure sitting still. Whatever swims in Cranberry Lake should be near shallow cover and weed edges. The day peaks in the night. Work fewer spots, but work them properly. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Cranberry Lake lies within the bounds of Halifax Regional Municipality, Nova Scotia. Land around it is pine and birch. It measures about 25 hectares, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. Bank access stretches around 4.4 km in total. Start from Musquodoboit Harbour, 15 km down the road. Dartmouth is the closest city, 48 km away. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
Depth here is unknown, so count the lead down before committing. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Across Halifax Regional Municipality, recorded fish include brook trout, alewife, rainbow smelt, American eel and Atlantic salmon. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. Cranberry Lake responds to conditions more than to tactics.
Climate normals give 18°C for August and -6°C for January. The middle months are generous; the ends are demanding. Hard cover is dependable here; it goes around mid April. On average, mid April opens the water and mid December closes it again. Look to early summer and the first cool weeks of autumn. At Cranberry Lake the season follows that pattern closely.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Provincial rules still apply whatever the bank status. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. Failing this one, try John Brayden Lake, 1.7 km away. Check the position at Cranberry Lake before loading the car.
