Overcast skies today, with a soft WNW wind and pressure going nowhere. The fish at Cranberry Lake are likely to sit near the shaded margin through bright spells. Bank on the evening and treat the rest as bonus. Push the good hours hard and rest through the dead ones. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

Cranberry Lake sits in Inverness County, out in Nova Scotia. The coast is 19 km away. The water covers some 10 hectares, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. The full circuit measures close to 1.3 km on foot. Compared with other Nova Scotia water on our list, it sits high. You are 25 km from Ingonish. Florence follows at 56 km, then Sydney Mines at 60 km. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Species logged across Inverness County include striped bass, Atlantic salmon, American eel and alewife. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. Cranberry Lake responds to conditions more than to tactics.
Long-run averages give July about 16°C and February about -9°C. Winter shuts the surface down for months. The lid usually goes in early May, which opens the strongest weeks of the year. Averages suggest open water from about early May through to roughly early December. Look to early summer and the first cool weeks of autumn. On Cranberry Lake the same rules apply, with local timing.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Nothing in the way of made access shows up nearby: no ramp, no car park, no path. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Rules differ from one water to the next round here. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. Cheticamp Flowage at 4.8 km is the sensible second choice. None of that is settled for Cranberry Lake in what we hold.
