Bright moon and an empty sky tonight, with a light chop building from the WSW and pressure going nowhere. Most of the action on Caribou Lake should come off the seam between weed and open water. Expect the better fishing from afternoon into evening. Give the likely spots time before moving.

Caribou Lake lies in Halifax Regional Municipality, in Nova Scotia. The shore lies 6 km out. With some 40 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. There is roughly 4.2 km of shoreline here, which is a short walk end to end. On our Halifax Regional Municipality list it sits near the top for size. 3.9 km away sits Mineville, the nearest town. Further out sit Porters Lake (4 km) and Lake Echo (5.4 km). There is no boundary nearby to worry about.
Our records hold no depth for this water. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. County-wide records name brook trout, alewife, rainbow smelt, American eel and Atlantic salmon. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. Treat Caribou Lake as a water to read rather than to cover.
Temperature averages peak at 18°C in August and bottom out at -5°C in January. Hard water is a season in its own right here. Count on hard cover from midwinter, and open water from mid April. On the long-run averages the water opens up around mid April and starts locking again about late December. Spring is short and heavy here; autumn is longer and steadier. Plan any trip to Caribou Lake around it.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. No slipway, car park or made path shows up nearby in mapping, so treat access as rough. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Take the rules with you rather than trusting memory. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. Figure Eight Lake at 0.9 km is the sensible second choice. Signs at Caribou Lake carry more weight than any list.
