A clear night sky over the water, with just enough NW wind to ripple the surface and pressure sitting still. Start the search at Bear Lake along the shaded margin through bright spells. One clear peak today: the night. Work fewer spots, but work them properly. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

Out in Annapolis County, Nova Scotia, sits Bear Lake. It stands 172 metres above sea level. Surface area is around 61 hectares, which gives you real water without needing a boat. There is roughly 5.8 km of bank, more than one visit can cover properly. On our Annapolis County list it sits near the top for size. Middleton is the closest place, 43 km off. Beyond it, Digby at 44 km and Greenwood at 50 km. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.
There is no recorded depth, so work from what you can see. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Species logged across Annapolis County include alewife, Atlantic salmon, chain pickerel, yellow perch and blueback herring. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. Fish Bear Lake to its features, not to its size.
The warmest month averages 18°C, the coldest about -6°C. Cold winters and warm summers give a wide working range. Count the season from break-up, usually mid April. Averages suggest open water from about mid April through to roughly mid December. From the thaw to midsummer the fishing improves week by week. It holds true on Bear Lake more years than not.
Public sources are silent on who controls the bank. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Nothing in the way of made access shows up nearby: no ramp, no car park, no path. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. Some banks are open only from a marked point. Where tickets apply, they are sold in the nearest town rather than on the bank. George Lake sits 1.7 km off and takes the overflow. Ask locally about Bear Lake if anything is unclear.
