Overcast skies today, with a faint ESE drift with the barometer flat. The water to cover at Baker Lake is points where shallow meets deep. Make the evening the heart of the trip. Make the first hour count and build on it. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Baker Lake is one of the Halifax Regional Municipality listings for Nova Scotia. Tidal water begins 30 km from here. The whole thing is a single swim; walk it in a minute. It is a small entry by Halifax Regional Municipality standards. Stellarton lies 49 km from the water. After that come Westville at 50 km and Stewiacke at 51 km. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Records held for Halifax Regional Municipality cover brook trout, alewife and rainbow smelt. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. Baker Lake gives up its fish to patience rather than distance.
Temperature averages peak at 18°C in August and bottom out at -6°C in January. The year splits cleanly: hard water, then open water. Count the season from break-up, usually mid April. Average temperatures cross freezing around mid April in spring and again near mid December in autumn. June through September is the settled part of the year, with the shoulders busier for fish. Baker Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
No public source sets out the position on this bank. The map shows no ramp or car park nearby, so this is a walk-in water. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Access can change hands, so last year's answer may not hold. Peak Monument Lake, 0.4 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Nothing on Baker Lake should be assumed from this page alone.
