Fishing at Needle Lake, South Slave Region, Northwest Territories

• Overview

  In Northwest Territories, Needle Lake falls inside South Slave Region. The bank is 265 metres above sea level. Roughly 2.26 sq km of surface: treat each bay as a water in its own right. Around 22 km of bank, which is a long day on foot. Our South Slave Region list holds plenty of bigger water. The town to know is Hay River, 94 km out. It is 754 km to Edmonton, the nearest city. • Where to Fish on Needle Lake

  No figure exists for depth, so let the water show you. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. County-wide records name Arctic grayling, lake trout, Arctic charr and slimy sculpin. Records at this level tell you what is in the area. Needle Lake responds to conditions more than to tactics.

  Long-run averages give July about 16°C and January about -23°C. The year here is short and sharp: a long lid, then a burst of open water. The lid usually goes in early May, which opens the strongest weeks of the year. Expect the water usable from around early May until roughly late October. May into June fishes hardest, and September gives a second good stretch before the lid returns. The season on Needle Lake follows the weather closely.
