Dull, settled light over the water, with a whisper of wind from the S with the glass holding level. Fish at Cook Lake should hold close to the shallows early and the drop later. A stay-home graph, with the night as the one excuse to go. Save the long walk for a better forecast. A raw day: short sessions and precise casts pay.

The South Slave Region entry here is Cook Lake, in Northwest Territories. The ground round it is open dry country. Surface area runs to some 28.66 sq km, so a boat and a plan are both worth having. Some 98 km of shoreline means conditions can differ from one end to the other. Yellowknife lies 298 km from the water. Behchokǫ̀ follows at 371 km, then Fort Smith at 394 km. Rules here are straightforward: one set of provincial rules.
No chart reached our records; the first cast is your sounding. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Across South Slave Region, recorded fish include Arctic grayling, lake trout, Arctic charr and slimy sculpin. Take it as the county picture rather than a promise for this water. Cook Lake responds to conditions more than to tactics.
Climate normals give 14°C for July and -29°C for January. Open water arrives late and leaves early, which concentrates the fishing. Ice is part of the season here, ending near early June. From about early June to around mid October, expect open water on the long-run figures. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. The season on Cook Lake rarely departs from it.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Mapping is blank for access, so scout the approach before committing the car. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Parking is often the real limit rather than the bank itself. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. Lac la Prise sits 17 km off and takes the overflow. None of that is settled for Cook Lake in what we hold.
