Solid cloud cover today, with a faint S drift and the barometer holding steady. On Compton Lake, work windblown banks where food collects first. Numbers are low everywhere; the night is the pick of them. Scale down and fish slowly. A properly cold day, so expect slow, deliberate fishing.

Compton Lake falls in South Slave Region, part of Northwest Territories. Height above sea level is 284 metres. About 9.01 sq km, so local knowledge or a boat saves a lot of walking. With 18 km or so of shoreline, boat anglers cover ground the bank cannot. It is a small entry by South Slave Region standards. The nearest place of any size is Yellowknife, 236 km away. Then Fort Smith, 303 km, and Behchokǫ̀, 321 km. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
We hold no depth figure for this one. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Records held for South Slave Region cover Arctic grayling, lake trout and Arctic charr. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. Work Compton Lake in sections rather than trying to cover it.
Average temperature peaks around 15°C in July and bottoms out near -28°C in January. The season is measured in weeks rather than months. Winter fishing happens on the ice here, with open water back around late May. The water is typically free of ice between late May and mid October. Fishing peaks soon after break-up and again before the cold returns. The season on Compton Lake rarely departs from it.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Mapping shows no built access close by; expect to walk in from wherever you can leave the car. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Parking is often the real limit rather than the bank itself. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. If the gate is shut, Meridian Lake at 20 km is the nearest alternative. Where Compton Lake is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
