Bright moon and an empty sky tonight, with a faint S drift with the glass holding level. Start the search at Pikes Pond along any feature that breaks the open water. A broad window opens from the day. Commit to the pattern once the first fish shows. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Newfoundland and Labrador holds Pikes Pond, in Whitbourne. The shore lies 8.3 km out. Surface area runs to about 4 hectares — small enough to read in one session. It is one of the smaller waters we list in Whitbourne. Whitbourne sits 8.1 km from the bank. After that come Clarke's Beach at 26 km and Spaniard's Bay at 30 km. Local rules may differ a few miles either side of here.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Survey and observation records for Whitbourne include American eel. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. On Pikes Pond the first feature you find is usually worth a session.
August runs about 16°C on average, February about -5°C. The season turns properly here, and fish follow it closely. Firm cover through the cold months, then open water from late April. On average, late April opens the water and late December closes it again. The open run goes from the thaw to the freeze, and April through October covers most of it. The season on Pikes Pond rarely departs from it.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Mapping is blank for access, so scout the approach before committing the car. One rod, a handful of hooks and floats, and a few small lures are enough for this water. Sort the permit out before you load the car. Access can change hands, so last year's answer may not hold. Should this one be busy, Peak Pond is 1.4 km off. Where Pikes Pond is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
