Showers crossing the water today, with a consistent blow out of the WNW and pressure sitting still. Start the search at Island Pond along the margins and any overhead cover. The productive run goes morning through afternoon. Start on the obvious water and expand from there. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

Island Pond stands in Terra Nova, Newfoundland and Labrador. The bank is 196 metres above sea level. At 1.98 sq km this is proper open water rather than a pond. The edge covers about 18 km, enough to hold several distinct areas. Head to Gambo, 49 km away, for anything you forgot. St. John's is the closest city, 175 km away. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
Our records hold no depth for this water. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Across Terra Nova, recorded fish include Atlantic salmon, brook trout and Arctic charr. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. Work Island Pond in sections rather than trying to cover it.
The year swings from about -8°C in February to roughly 16°C in July. A full turn of seasons, with the strongest sport on either side of summer. The freeze runs deep into the year, with break-up near late April. Average temperatures cross freezing around late April in spring and again near early December in autumn. Spring is short and heavy here; autumn is longer and steadier. Island Pond fishes to that pattern most years.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Mapping is blank for access, so scout the approach before committing the car. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. If the gate is shut, Lake St. John at 7.8 km is the nearest alternative. For Island Pond, the notice at the access point is the final word.
