A rainy spell sitting over the area, with a consistent blow out of the ESE and no real change in pressure. The fish at Eastern Pond are likely to sit near the shaded bank through the bright hours. The strongest window is the morning. Trust the forecast and stay out through the window. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

The Grand Falls-Windsor end of Newfoundland and Labrador holds Eastern Pond. It lies 164 metres above sea level. This is sizeable water at about 1.66 sq km, and a boat opens up most of it. There is roughly 14 km of bank, more than one visit can cover properly. For a base, Grand Falls-Windsor sits 50 km out. The big place round here is St. John's, 220 km distant. This one is safely inside the county line.
The records we hold are silent on depth, so plan to find it yourself. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. County-wide records name Atlantic salmon, American eel, brook trout and rainbow smelt. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. Work Eastern Pond in sections rather than trying to cover it.
Long-term averages put July at about 16°C and February near -8°C. A solid cap is the normal state through winter. Break-up comes around late April, and the run that follows is short and strong. Average temperatures cross freezing around late April in spring and again near early December in autumn. September and October fish steadily right up to the freeze. At Eastern Pond the season follows that pattern closely.
The paperwork position is blank for this one. Access is unmapped, which usually means a farm track and a walk. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. The nearest alternative is Greenwood Pond, 7.8 km out. Rules at Eastern Pond are worth checking on the day.
