A rainy spell sitting over the area, with a whisper of wind from the ENE with the barometer flat. Most of the action on Otter Lake should come off inflow corners and shaded margins. Everything points to the evening. Make the first hour count and build on it. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Otter Lake lies in Kings County, New Brunswick. It stands 238 metres above sea level. The water measures roughly 7 hectares, so nothing here is far from anything else. It is high ground by New Brunswick standards. Supplies mean a trip to Grand Bay-Westfield, 11 km off. The big place round here is Dartmouth, 228 km distant. A county line runs close by, so local bylaws can differ within a short drive.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Reported across Kings County: alewife, Atlantic salmon, yellow perch and brook trout. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. On Otter Lake that means starting tight and working out.
Long-run averages give July about 18°C and January about -9°C. Fishing here follows the temperature more than the calendar. Ice-out usually falls in mid April, and the weeks after it fish hardest. Ice clears near mid April and comes back about early December in a typical year. September and October fish steadily right up to the freeze. The season on Otter Lake rarely departs from it.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Nothing built is recorded close to the bank here. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Sort the permit out before you load the car. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. Mud Lake sits 0.9 km off and takes the overflow. For Otter Lake in particular, ask before you travel.
