Soft grey light all day today, with a kind SSW breeze on the water and the barometer holding steady. Activity on Niles Lake should centre on the calm side of the wind. Numbers are low everywhere; the middle of the day is the pick of them. Take the small wins and call it early if it dies.

Niles Lake lies in Westmorland County, in New Brunswick. The surface lies 7 metres up. Around 39 hectares of surface means several distinct areas to work. Shoreline comes to about 3.2 km, small enough to learn in a day. It ranks high for size among our Westmorland County listings. Nearest place of any size is Strait Shores, 8 km away. Then Cap-Pele, 13 km, and Cap-Acadie, 15 km. No boundary runs near, so the local rules hold throughout.
We hold no survey for this water; read the slope of the shoreline instead. This is tidal water: the state of the tide decides where fish sit, so plan the session around it. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. County-wide records name brook trout, yellow perch, American eel, white perch and white sucker. Fish Niles Lake to its features, not to its size.
The seasonal spread runs -8°C to 18°C. The year splits cleanly: hard water, then open water. After mid April the shallows warm and the fish move up. Climate averages put the opening at about mid April and the closing near mid December. Spring is short and heavy here; autumn is longer and steadier. That is the shape of the year on Niles Lake.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. No made access appears within a short radius, so plan to park on a verge and walk. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Parking is often the real limit rather than the bank itself. Some ground is open by custom rather than by right, so tread carefully. Should this one be busy, Collins Lake is 2.4 km off. Signs at Niles Lake carry more weight than any list.
