Solid cloud cover today, with just enough NW wind to ripple the surface with a settled glass. Activity on Mud Lake should centre on shallow cover and weed edges. A slow day overall; the night is the best of a quiet lot. Scale down and fish slowly. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

Mud Lake is a Charlotte County water, in New Brunswick. Salt water lies 2.4 km off. It covers about 9 hectares, so this is small water you can walk round in under an hour. By elevation it sits in the lower part of our New Brunswick listings. Nearest place of any size is Saint Andrews, 13 km away. St. George lies 16 km off, Eastern Charlotte another 20 km. The nearest edge is a long way off, so local rules apply throughout.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Across Charlotte County, recorded fish include Atlantic salmon, coalfish, alewife, Atlantic cod and rainbow smelt. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. Anyone new to Mud Lake should walk it once before setting up.
Between January at about -8°C and July at about 19°C, the water has a wide range to work through. Four clear seasons, with a proper winter at one end. Once it clears, about mid April, the fishing comes on quickly. The season between ice runs from about mid April to early December. From the thaw to midsummer the fishing improves week by week. Mud Lake fishes to that pattern most years.
Our records carry no access rule either way. No made access is recorded, so a short walk in is the likely arrangement. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. A phone call first saves an afternoon. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. Should this one be busy, Bills Lake is 1.8 km off. Confirm before you fish Mud Lake.
