A soft, muffled morning under mist, with just enough SSW wind to ripple the surface with the barometer flat. Give the margins and the shelf beyond them the first hour at Lair Lake. A hard day on paper; the morning edges the rest. Go lighter and slower than usual. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

The Kings County end of New Brunswick holds Lair Lake. Tidal water begins 17 km from here. A pocket of water where every cast reaches cover. It is one of the smaller waters we list in Kings County. Supplies mean a trip to Penobsquis, 20 km off. The big place round here is Dartmouth, 167 km distant. The boundary is close enough to be worth checking before you fish.
Our records hold no depth for this water. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Reported across Kings County: alewife, Atlantic salmon and yellow perch. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. At Lair Lake the first feature you find is worth twenty minutes.
Expect July to average close to 17°C, with January the cold end at about -9°C. Fishing here follows the temperature more than the calendar. Ice-out usually falls in late April, and the weeks after it fish hardest. On the long-run averages the water opens up around late April and starts locking again about early December. May into June fishes hardest, and September gives a second good stretch before the lid returns. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Lair Lake.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. There is no mapped parking or launch nearby, which keeps numbers down. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Parking space is the usual limit rather than the bank itself. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. The nearest alternative is Wolfe Lake, 2.8 km out. Confirm access to Lair Lake locally before you travel.
