Low mist over the surface today, with a soft SSW wind and no real change in pressure. The water to cover at Duck Lake is windblown banks where food collects. Numbers are low everywhere; the evening is the pick of them. Lower the pace and stay patient. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Duck Lake is one of the Kings County waters in New Brunswick. Height above sea level is 75 metres. At about 15 hectares, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. The whole outline is near 2.9 km, and most of it is walkable. Nearest town is Rothesay, 3.4 km off. The big place round here is Dartmouth, 204 km distant. Being near a boundary, it pays to know which side you are fishing.
Depth remains unrecorded, so treat the first session as a survey. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Records held for Kings County cover alewife, Atlantic salmon, yellow perch, brook trout and rainbow smelt. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. On Duck Lake the quiet end is the one worth the extra effort.
Long-term averages put July at about 18°C and January near -8°C. A full turn of seasons, with the strongest sport on either side of summer. Break-up comes around mid April, and the run that follows is short and strong. Ice usually gives way near mid April, and forms again about mid December. Look to early summer and the first cool weeks of autumn. The season on Duck Lake rarely departs from it.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Nothing built is recorded close to the bank here. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Rules for this water may differ from the county norm. Access can change hands, so last year's answer may not hold. Should this one be busy, Shaw Lake is 1.9 km off. Check the current arrangement for Duck Lake.
