A grey, even sky over the water, with the surface near flat with a settled glass. On Wood Lake, work inflow corners and shaded margins first. Plan around the stretch from the day. Keep moving until you find them. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

Wood Lake sits within Rolette County in North Dakota. It sits in pine and birch country. Around 85 acres of surface means several distinct areas to work. Around 2.3 miles of margin, front to back. It is high ground by North Dakota standards. Deloraine lies 12 miles from the water. The big place round here is Winnipeg, 152 miles distant. It sits well inside its county, with no border complications.
No figure exists for depth, so let the water show you. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Across Rolette County, recorded fish include bluegill, northern pike, white bass and yellow perch. Records at this level tell you what is in the area. The near bank of Wood Lake is often the one people ignore.
Expect July to average close to 65°F, with January the cold end at about 1°F. Winter shuts things down for a spell, then spring reopens them fast. Once it clears, about late April, the fishing comes on quickly. On the long-run averages the water opens up around late April and starts locking again about mid November. Fishing peaks soon after break-up and again before the cold returns. Wood Lake runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
Our records carry no access rule either way. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Access is unmapped, which usually means a farm track and a walk. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Parking is often the real limit rather than the bank itself. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. West McKay Lake sits 1.2 miles off and takes the overflow. Nothing on Wood Lake should be assumed from this page alone.
