Cloud from horizon to horizon today, with a proper ripple driven from the SSE and pressure sitting still. The productive water at Swan Lake will be around the weed line and any gaps in it. Set the alarm around the morning. Let the water tell you when to move. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

Manitoba holds Swan Lake, in Killarney-Turtle Mountain. The water sits 496 metres up. Roughly 22 hectares: a morning covers one end, an afternoon the other. The bank runs about 2.0 km all the way round, so one visit can cover most of it. Boissevain lies 14 km from the water. Killarney lies 15 km off, Belcourt another 42 km. Rules here are straightforward: one set of provincial rules.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Survey and observation records for Killarney-Turtle Mountain include white sucker, johnny darter, northern pike, yellow perch and blackside darter. The county list is broader than any single water. Swan Lake repays a walk before the first cast.
Seasonal averages run from -17°C in January up to 19°C in July. A hard winter is normal, and the thaw brings a strong few weeks. Ice fishing carries the winter, and the water opens about late April. Averages suggest open water from about late April through to roughly mid November. Reckon on open water from spring through to late autumn, with May and June the strongest. Plan any trip to Swan Lake around it.
There is no clear statement anywhere on who can fish it. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Public mapping marks it as seasonal water rather than permanent. Nothing is listed nearby for parking or launching a boat. Season dates differ by species, so read the table. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. If the gate is shut, Lake Fourteen at 5 km is the nearest alternative. Confirm access to Swan Lake locally before you travel.
