A closed sky with even light today, with a gentle ripple from the W and pressure sitting still. Start the search at Spur Lake along the weed line and any gaps in it. Plan around the stretch from morning through afternoon. Keep moving until you find them. The season of moving fish: stay mobile and watch for bait.

Spur Lake lies in Grandview, Manitoba. The setting is lake country bush on every side. It covers about 9 hectares, so this is small water you can walk round in under an hour. The bank runs about 1.6 km all the way round, so one visit can cover most of it. The town to know is Roblin, 25 km out. Kamsack is 66 km and Dauphin 71 km. It sits well inside its county, with no border complications.
Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Fish documented in Grandview include Iowa darter, northern pike, white sucker, yellow perch and finescale dace. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. Treat Spur Lake as a water to read rather than to cover.
Expect July to average close to 17°C, with January the cold end at about -19°C. Four clear seasons, with a proper winter at one end. Ice-out usually falls in late April, and the weeks after it fish hardest. Going by climate averages, expect open water from about late April until roughly mid November. The strong weeks are the first after break-up and the last before the freeze. Plan any trip to Spur Lake around it.
No access rule appears in what we hold. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Formal access is not mapped, so the last stretch is likely on foot. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. A phone call first saves an afternoon. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. Highland Lake at 0.7 km is the sensible second choice. Signs at Spur Lake carry more weight than any list.
