Low, flat cloud sitting over the water, with the water lying quiet with a settled glass. Give structure within a cast of the bank the first hour at Spider Lake. The best of it runs the day. Small adjustments will matter more than big moves. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Spider Lake is one of the Kelsey waters in Manitoba. Boreal forest runs right down to the water. Roughly 2.03 sq km of surface: treat each bay as a water in its own right. The shoreline runs about 18 km, so it pays to pick a stretch and stay with it. Nearest place of any size is Snow Lake, 56 km away. After that come Flin Flon at 69 km and Creighton at 71 km. This one is safely inside the county line.
Depth is unmeasured here, so let the shoreline guide you. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Across Kelsey, recorded fish include white sucker, johnny darter, northern pike, walleye and silver redhorse. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. Spider Lake gives up more to patience than to distance.
Long-run averages give July about 17°C and January about -23°C. Winter runs most of the calendar, and everything worth doing happens in the gap. Hard cover is dependable here; it goes around early May. Averages suggest open water from about early May through to roughly early November. Fish feed hardest at the start and the close of the open season. On Spider Lake that shapes the whole year.
Our records carry no access rule either way. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. No made access is recorded, so a short walk in is the likely arrangement. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. Ask in the nearest town if you are unsure. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. The nearest alternative is Paddy Lake, 2.5 km out. Nothing here settles the position at Spider Lake for certain.
