Soft grey light all day today, with just enough W wind to ripple the surface with the barometer flat. Start the search at Slater Lake along sheltered bays and points. Block out the hours from the day. Cover water early, then settle where the signs are. The season of moving fish: stay mobile and watch for bait.

The Yellowhead end of Manitoba holds Slater Lake. It sits at 584 metres above sea level. Roughly 31 hectares: a morning covers one end, an afternoon the other. The bank runs about 4.7 km all the way round, so one visit can cover most of it. On size it sits at the modest end of our Yellowhead list. Dauphin lies 49 km from the water. Beyond it, Minnedosa at 57 km and Neepawa at 74 km. The nearest edge is a long way off, so local rules apply throughout.
No depth figure appears in our records, so the bank has to tell you. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. County-wide records name northern pike, yellow perch and walleye. It is the county picture; the agency list is water-specific. At Slater Lake the first feature you find is worth twenty minutes.
The warm month here averages 18°C; the cold one sits at -19°C. Expect a real winter and a strong spring after it. Ice fishing carries the winter, and the water opens about late April. Expect the water usable from around late April until roughly mid November. September and October fish steadily right up to the freeze. Slater Lake fishes to that pattern most years.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Mapping shows an empty shoreline: no ramp, no jetty, no marked entry. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Take the rules with you rather than trusting memory. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. The nearest alternative is Gunville Lake, 2.2 km out. Ask locally about Slater Lake if anything is unclear.
