A closed sky with even light today, with a helpful ripple pushed from the NW and no real change in pressure. Most of the action on Cole Lake should come off points where shallow meets deep. Bank on the middle of the day and treat the rest as bonus. Give the likely spots time before moving. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Cole Lake is set in Kelsey, Manitoba. It lies 216 metres above sea level. At some 1.35 sq km it is far too large to cover on foot in a day. The shoreline runs about 7.7 km, so it pays to pick a stretch and stay with it. By elevation it sits in the lower part of our Manitoba listings. Head to Cross Lake 19A, 63 km away, for anything you forgot. Beyond it, Thompson at 67 km and Snow Lake at 123 km. The nearest boundary is well away, so one set of rules covers the water.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Reported across Kelsey: white sucker, johnny darter and northern pike. Read it as a county summary, not a water-by-water list. Anyone new to Cole Lake should walk it once before setting up.
The range across the year is -24°C to 17°C. Water stays cold even at the height of the year. Hard water holds through the cold months, breaking up near mid May. On average, mid May opens the water and early November closes it again. The weeks after the thaw and the ones before the freeze are the strongest. The season on Cole Lake follows the weather closely.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. The map shows no ramp or car park nearby, so this is a walk-in water. Pike mean a wire trace, no exceptions; big spoons and jerkbaits do the searching. Rules for this water may differ from the county norm. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. Echo Lake at 0.9 km is the sensible second choice. Confirm access to Cole Lake locally before you travel.
