Overcast skies today, with a useful WNW wind pushing food about with the glass holding level. Give shallow cover and weed edges the first hour at Bison Lake. A stay-home graph, with the middle of the day as the one excuse to go. Downsize everything and pick the calmest water. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

Bison Lake sits within Kelsey in Manitoba. It lies 219 metres above sea level. Surface area runs to some 10.22 sq km, so a boat and a plan are both worth having. There is roughly 20 km of bank, more than one visit can cover properly. On our Kelsey list it sits near the top for size. Thompson is the closest town at 48 km. The big place round here is Winnipeg, 627 km distant. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
Depth figures are not published for this one. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Records held for Kelsey cover white sucker, johnny darter, northern pike, walleye and silver redhorse. Species recorded across the county may be limited to a few waters. At Bison Lake light and wind decide more than tackle does.
Between January at about -25°C and July at about 16°C, the water has a wide range to work through. Ice holds for a long stretch, so the open weeks matter more here than further south. Hard water holds through the cold months, breaking up near mid May. The open-water window runs from around mid May to about early November in an average year. Look to early summer and the first cool weeks of autumn. At Bison Lake the season follows that pattern closely.
There is no clear statement anywhere on who can fish it. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Nothing in the way of made access shows up nearby: no ramp, no car park, no path. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. Some banks are open only from a marked point. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. Duncan Wood Lake at 8 km is the sensible second choice. Confirm access to Bison Lake locally before you travel.
