Open sky and sharp air tonight, with a whisper of wind from the S with the glass holding level. Whatever swims in Shortt Lake should be near reed fringes and open pockets. The numbers single out the night. Cover water early, then settle where the signs are. A cold snap day, so work the warmest water you can find.

Shortt Lake is one of the Wood Buffalo waters in Alberta. The water sits 467 metres up. The water covers around 5.50 sq km, which puts most of it out of reach from the bank. With 14 km or so of shoreline, boat anglers cover ground the bank cannot. Head to Fort McMurray, 76 km away, for anything you forgot. Further out sit Buffalo Narrows (129 km) and Lac La Biche (220 km). This one is safely inside the county line.
We hold no survey for this water; read the slope of the shoreline instead. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Across Wood Buffalo, recorded fish include longnose sucker, Arctic grayling, white sucker and mountain whitefish. County data is a starting point rather than a guarantee. The shape of Shortt Lake decides where the fish sit.
Climate records put July near 16°C and January near -19°C. The freeze holds for the better part of the year. Hard cover is dependable here; it goes around late April. Average temperatures cross freezing around late April in spring and again near early November in autumn. Fish feed hardest at the start and the close of the open season. Shortt Lake runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Access is unmapped, which usually means a farm track and a walk. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. Where the road in crosses private land, ask first. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. Mary Lake, 4 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Ask locally about Shortt Lake if anything is unclear.
