A wide-open sky and strong sun today, with a helpful ripple pushed from the WSW and the barometer holding steady. On Ross Lake, work inflow corners and shaded margins first. The best of it runs night into morning. Push the good hours hard and rest through the dead ones. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Ross Lake sits within Cardston County in Alberta. The land about it is pine and birch. About 1.98 sq km, so local knowledge or a boat saves a lot of walking. The shoreline runs about 9.0 km, so it pays to pick a stretch and stay with it. The closest town, Cardston, is 28 km distant. The nearest city of size is Lethbridge, 62 km away. It sits well inside its county, with no border complications.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Reported across Cardston County: longnose sucker, white sucker, mountain whitefish and mountain sucker. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. Read Ross Lake for ten minutes before the first cast goes out.
The year swings from about -8°C in January to roughly 16°C in August. Spring and autumn carry the fishing; summer and winter test it. The lid arrives early and lasts until roughly mid April. On average, mid April opens the water and late November closes it again. Just after the ice goes and just before it returns, the fishing lifts. Ross Lake fishes to that pattern most years.
The paperwork position is blank for this one. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. No launch point is recorded nearby, so this is a bank water unless you carry a boat in. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Gates get locked out of season on water like this. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. If the gate is shut, Croffs Lake at 27 km is the nearest alternative. Check the position on Ross Lake before loading the car.
