Overcast skies today, with light air out of the SSW and pressure sitting still. Whatever swims in Rat Lake should be near reed fringes and open pockets. A broad window opens from the day. Commit to the pattern once the first fish shows. A hard-frost feel to the day; keep expectations modest.

Rat Lake is listed under Lac la Biche County, Alberta. The surface lies 653 metres up. At some 3.36 sq km it is far too large to cover on foot in a day. At about 11 km of edge, most people work one arm at a time. Supplies mean a trip to Lac La Biche, 84 km off. After that come Cold Lake at 133 km and Grand Centre at 136 km. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Lac la Biche County records list northern pike, yellow perch and white sucker among the fish reported. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. Work Rat Lake in sections rather than trying to cover it.
Typical July readings run about 16°C; by January the average is down near -19°C. The ice season is long here and the open one short. Expect a solid lid for months and a thaw around late April. Expect the water usable from around late April until roughly early November. Spring is short and heavy here; autumn is longer and steadier. Rat Lake fishes to that pattern most years.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. There is no mapped parking or launch nearby, which keeps numbers down. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Rules for this water may differ from the county norm. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. Should this one be busy, Glover Lake is 7.2 km off. For Rat Lake, the notice at the access point is the final word.
