Light moving in and out all day, with a soft SE wind and pressure sitting still. Whatever swims in Magee Lake should be near the weed line and any gaps in it. A long productive spell runs the day. Make the first hour count and build on it. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

In Alberta, Magee Lake falls inside Ponoka County. The country here is mixed forest. It measures about 45 hectares, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. Bank access stretches around 4.5 km in total. Most waters listed here for Ponoka County are larger. Ponoka sits 18 km from here and is the nearest stop. The nearest city of size is Red Deer, 43 km away. A border sits close enough to be relevant to the paperwork.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. County-wide records name northern pike, yellow perch, lake trout, lake whitefish and Prussian carp. What holds for the county may not hold for this water. Work Magee Lake in sections rather than trying to cover it.
The year swings from about -12°C in January to roughly 16°C in July. Expect a real winter and a strong spring after it. Count on hard cover from midwinter, and open water from mid April. The water is typically free of ice between mid April and mid November. The middle of summer slows a little, with dawn and dusk carrying it. Anyone fishing Magee Lake regularly works to that calendar.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. A picnic spot sits 220 m from the bank. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Where the road in crosses private land, ask first. Access can change hands, so last year's answer may not hold. McLean's Lake, 8.1 km away, makes the obvious fallback. For Magee Lake, the notice at the access point is the final word.
