Clear overhead with good moonlight, with mild air moving in from the S with the glass holding level. Whatever swims in Fairfax Lake should be near the calm side of the wind. Numbers are low everywhere; the morning is the pick of them. Go lighter and slower than usual. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

Fairfax Lake lies in Yellowhead County, Alberta. It lies 1,315 metres above sea level. Roughly 33 hectares: a morning covers one end, an afternoon the other. About 3.0 km of bank, so nothing stays unexplored for long. Edson is the closest town at 69 km. Red Deer is the closest city, 203 km away. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
Depth is not on record here, which means reading the ground instead. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Across Yellowhead County, recorded fish include rainbow trout, mountain whitefish and brook trout. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. At Fairfax Lake the first feature you find is worth twenty minutes.
Expect July to average close to 13°C, with January the cold end at about -12°C. Hard water is a season in its own right here. Expect a solid lid for months and a thaw around late April. Ice clears near late April and comes back about mid November in a typical year. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. Anyone fishing Fairfax Lake regularly works to that calendar.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. A boat ramp sits 320 m away, so trailered boats can get on. There is a mapped landing stage 300 m away. Mapping shows a campsite some 480 m from the water. Where the road in crosses private land, ask first. Access can change hands, so last year's answer may not hold. Should this one be busy, Muskiki Lake is 24 km off. For Fairfax Lake in particular, ask before you travel.
