A blustery day over the water, with just enough W wind to ripple the surface and pressure sitting still. Most of the action on Crooked Lake should come off points where shallow meets deep. Little to get excited about, though the evening holds a sliver of promise. One good spot fished well beats five fished quickly.

Crooked Lake belongs to Fox Creek, Alberta. The land about it is pine and birch. About 7.82 sq km, so local knowledge or a boat saves a lot of walking. The edge covers about 22 km, enough to hold several distinct areas. Fox Creek sits 29 km from the bank. Further out sit Valleyview (69 km) and Whitecourt (106 km). Round about: Smoke Lake after 22 km, Iosegun Lake 26 km away, Giroux Lake after 26 km, Raspberry Lake 32 km away and Birch Lake after 38 km. This one is safely inside the county line.
No figure exists for depth, so let the water show you. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Across Fox Creek, recorded fish include longnose sucker, white sucker and yellow perch. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. At Crooked Lake the water rewards a slow, careful approach.
On the long-term average, July reads 15°C and January reads -11°C. Winter shuts things down for a spell, then spring reopens them fast. Ice-out usually falls in mid April, and the weeks after it fish hardest. Climate figures give an open season running mid April to mid November. Fish feed hardest at the start and the close of the open season. Crooked Lake runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
No access rule appears in what we hold. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. No built facilities appear in mapping around this water. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. Some banks are open only from a marked point. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. Smoke Lake sits 22 km off and takes the overflow. Rules at Crooked Lake are worth checking on the day.
