A grey, foggy start today, with calm air over the water and pressure going nowhere. Fish at Cirque Lake should hold close to any hard bottom among the soft. The day holds up well from night into morning. Work the productive water thoroughly. A raw day: short sessions and precise casts pay.

Cirque Lake is an Improvement District No. 9 water, Alberta side. The water sits 1,807 metres up. Roughly 40 hectares: a morning covers one end, an afternoon the other. Shoreline comes to about 3.1 km, small enough to learn in a day. Start from Lake Louise, 53 km down the road. Then Golden, 61 km, and Banff, 102 km. This one is safely inside the county line.
No figure exists for depth, so let the water show you. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Species logged across Improvement District No. 9 include brook trout, bull trout, cutthroat trout, mountain whitefish and rainbow trout. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. The near bank of Cirque Lake is often the one people ignore.
Long-term averages put August at about 10°C and January near -14°C. Spring and autumn carry the fishing; summer and winter test it. The lid usually sets by midwinter and gives way around late May. Climate figures give an open season running late May to late October. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. On Cirque Lake that shapes the whole year.
Nothing on record says whether the bank is open or closed. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Access points are not mapped for this water, which suits people who like quiet. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. The nearest alternative is Waterfowl Lakes, 3 km out. Check the position at Cirque Lake before loading the car.
