Clear air and long views across the water tonight, with a faint SSW drift and no real change in pressure. Give structure within a cast of the bank the first hour at Bear Lake. A long productive spell runs the day. Make the first hour count and build on it. Biting air and slow fish: small baits, long pauses.

Bear Lake is listed under Municipal District of Bonnyville No. 87, Alberta. The water sits 652 metres up. At some 1.69 sq km it is far too large to cover on foot in a day. Around 9.4 km of bank, which is a long day on foot. The town to know is Bonnyville, 43 km out. Beyond it, Grand Centre at 44 km and Elk Point at 46 km. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Across Municipal District of Bonnyville No. 87, recorded fish include yellow perch, Iowa darter, walleye, white sucker and northern pike. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. Work Bear Lake in sections rather than trying to cover it.
Climate normals give 16°C for July and -16°C for January. Open water arrives late and leaves early, which concentrates the fishing. Winter locks it down, and late April brings it back. The lid tends to go about late April and return around mid November. Just after the ice goes and just before it returns, the fishing lifts. The season on Bear Lake follows the weather closely.
The paperwork position is blank for this one. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. A landowner's word beats anything printed elsewhere. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. Moonshine Lake sits 8.4 km off and takes the overflow. Rules at Bear Lake are worth checking on the day.
