Clear overhead with good moonlight, with hardly a ripple anywhere with a settled glass. The productive water at Bayard Lake will be around the seam between weed and open water. Make the night the heart of the trip. Fish tidy and take what the day gives. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

Bayard Lake lies in Wood Buffalo, in Alberta. The surface lies 660 metres up. The water covers around 1.20 sq km, which puts most of it out of reach from the bank. About 4.4 km of bank, so nothing stays unexplored for long. 131 km away sits Fort McMurray, the nearest town. The nearest city of size is Edmonton, 474 km away. There is no boundary nearby to worry about.
Depth went unrecorded, which puts the reading back on you. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Wood Buffalo records list longnose sucker, Arctic grayling, white sucker, mountain whitefish and yellow perch among the fish reported. County records show the wider picture rather than this one place. On Bayard Lake that means starting tight and working out.
Expect July to average close to 15°C, with January the cold end at about -21°C. The fishing year opens late and shuts early. Winter locks it down, and early May brings it back. Climate figures give an open season running early May to early November. The middle of summer slows a little, with dawn and dusk carrying it. Plan any trip to Bayard Lake around it.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Nothing built is recorded close to the bank here. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Where the road in crosses private land, ask first. Some ground is open by custom rather than by right, so tread carefully. For a change of water, Michael Lake is 1.8 km distant. What applies at Bayard Lake may have changed since it was mapped.
