A half-covered sky tonight, with a light SW breeze and no real change in pressure. Activity on Baril Lake should centre on the seam between weed and open water. A grinding day likely, with the night worth the effort if any is. Save the long walk for a better forecast. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Baril Lake is one of the Improvement District No. 24 waters in Alberta. It stands 208 metres above sea level. It covers about 69.84 sq km, which means weather matters as much as tactics. The outline has a few bays and points rather than one plain curve. The closest town, Fort Smith, is 138 km distant. Then Fort McMurray, 227 km, and La Crête, 282 km. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.
No depth figure appears in our records, so the bank has to tell you. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Records held for Improvement District No. 24 cover goldeye, northern pike, walleye, cisco and Iowa darter. County records show the wider picture rather than this one place. The near bank of Baril Lake is often the one people ignore.
Averages here run 17°C at the top of summer and -23°C at the bottom of winter. The ice season is long here and the open one short. Expect a solid lid for months and a thaw around early May. Expect the water usable from around early May until roughly early November. Just after the ice goes and just before it returns, the fishing lifts. Baril Lake fishes to that pattern most years.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. No made access appears within a short radius, so plan to park on a verge and walk. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. Provincial rules still apply whatever the bank status. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. Failing this one, try Four Forks Lake, 8.9 km away. Ask locally about Baril Lake if anything is unclear.
