A blustery day over the water, with a kind WSW breeze on the water with the glass holding level. Most of the action on Aster Lake should come off the weed line and any gaps in it. The strongest window is the middle of the day. Start on the obvious water and expand from there. A cold snap day, so work the warmest water you can find.

The Kananaskis Improvement District end of Alberta holds Aster Lake. The country here is pine and birch. It runs to roughly 19 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. Roughly 2.2 km of bank means you can walk to a fresh area when one goes quiet. It is high ground by Alberta standards. Supplies mean a trip to Canmore, 57 km off. Beyond it, Invermere at 59 km and Radium Hot Springs at 61 km. There is no boundary nearby to worry about.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Reported across Kananaskis Improvement District: mountain whitefish, brook trout, brown trout, longnose sucker and white sucker. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. Aster Lake fishes better once you know its edges.
The range across the year is -14°C to 8°C. Winter shuts things down for a spell, then spring reopens them fast. The lid usually goes in early June, which opens the strongest weeks of the year. Break-up near early June, freeze-up near late October: that is the shape of an average year. The open run goes from the thaw to the freeze, and April through October covers most of it. Expect Aster Lake to follow that timing.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. A campsite lies 520 m away for anyone staying over. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. Where a permit is needed, the nearest town usually sells it. Where tickets apply, they are sold in the nearest town rather than on the bank. For a change of water, Rawson Lake is 4.4 km distant. The position on Aster Lake is worth confirming on the day.
