Wind working the surface all day, with flat calm through the day and pressure going nowhere. On Alderson Lake, work the shaded margin through bright spells first. Block out the hours from night into morning. Slow down and let the fish find the bait. A hard-frost feel to the day; keep expectations modest.

The Improvement District No. 4 entry here is Alderson Lake, in Alberta. It lies 1,855 metres above sea level. It measures about 13 hectares, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. About 1.4 km of bank, so nothing stays unexplored for long. Pincher Creek is the closest place, 50 km off. The big place round here is Lethbridge, 112 km distant. The nearest boundary is a fair way off.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Public occurrence data for Improvement District No. 4 names brook trout, rainbow trout, mountain whitefish, cutthroat trout and longnose sucker. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. Anyone new to Alderson Lake should walk it once before setting up.
The year swings from about -9°C in January to roughly 13°C in August. A full turn of seasons, with the strongest sport on either side of summer. Hard water holds through the cold months, breaking up near early May. From about early May to around mid November, expect open water on the long-run figures. The middle of summer slows a little, with dawn and dusk carrying it. At Alderson Lake the season follows that pattern closely.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. A campsite is mapped about 310 m away, which makes an early start easier. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. A landowner's word beats anything printed elsewhere. Where tickets apply, they are sold in the nearest town rather than on the bank. If the gate is shut, Bertha Lake at 2.6 km is the nearest alternative. Ask locally about Alderson Lake if anything is unclear.
