Bright moon and an empty sky tonight, with an easy breeze from the NE with the glass holding level. The productive water at Ross Lake will be around the first drop-off and weed lines. Block out the hours from night into morning. Cover water early, then settle where the signs are. Pre-summer fish are feeding up and mobile.

In Victoria, Ross Lake belongs to Hindmarsh. The bank is 72 metres above sea level. The water covers some 50 hectares, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. Supplies mean a trip to Nhill, 63 km off. For a city, Bendigo is 236 km off. Within a short drive: Lake Albacutya at 7.5 km, Lake Brimin within 28 km, Lake Hindmarsh at 28 km, Lake Brambruk within 31 km and Lake Plagianth at 32 km. No regional boundary comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
Depth is not on record here, so the bank has to tell you. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. On Ross Lake that means starting tight and working out. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred.
In an average year February sits at 23°C and July at 9°C. The calendar barely matters here; the time of day does. The shoulder seasons either side of summer are the ones to aim for. Winter is cool and quiet, and often the most comfortable time to be out. Anyone fishing Ross Lake regularly works to that calendar.
We have no record of the rules that apply on this bank. Records show it does not hold water year-round. No made access appears within a short radius, so plan to park on a verge and walk. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. Check whether bait restrictions apply before you buy any. If the gate is shut, Lake Albacutya at 7.5 km is the nearest alternative. Check the position at Ross Lake before loading the car.
