A clean, cloudless night over the water, with stillness over the whole water with a settled glass. Activity on Lake Gnarpurt should centre on reed fringes and open pockets. Block out the hours from afternoon into evening. Cover water early, then settle where the signs are. Early-season fish sit where winter loosens first.

Look for Lake Gnarpurt in the Corangamite part of Victoria. It stands 113 metres above sea level. Around 22.37 sq km of open water: conditions change from one end to the other. You are looking at roughly 19 km of shoreline, with plenty of water between access points. On our Corangamite list it sits near the top for size. 29 km away sits Camperdown, the nearest town. Ballarat sits 68 km out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. The nearest boundary is well away, so one set of rules covers the water.
No chart reached our records; the first cast is your sounding. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Species logged nearby in open biodiversity records include Chinook salmon, rainbow trout and shortfin eel. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. On Lake Gnarpurt a short move beats a long cast.
Average temperature peaks around 19°C in February and bottoms out near 9°C in July. Warm months push fish deep; cool months bring them back. The shoulder seasons either side of summer are the ones to aim for. Spring, September into November, fishes hardest, with autumn a close second. The season on Lake Gnarpurt follows the weather closely.
No access rule appears in what we hold. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Nothing built is recorded close to the bank here. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. Some banks are open only from a marked point. Keep proof of licence with you rather than in the car. Lake Coradgill at 6.8 km is the sensible second choice. For Lake Gnarpurt, the notice at the access point is the final word.
