A crisp, open sky after dark, with an easy breeze from the SW and the barometer holding steady. Fish at Lake Buffalo should hold close to sheltered bays and points. The best of it runs night into morning. Push the good hours hard and rest through the dead ones. The spring warm-up puts fish on the sunny banks.

Lake Buffalo lies within the bounds of Alpine, Victoria. The land about it is dry hill. Roughly 3.17 sq km of surface: treat each bay as a water in its own right. The margin runs to about 16 km in total. Of the waters listed here in Alpine, this is the largest. Myrtleford at 19 km is the nearest place to stop. The nearest city of size is Melbourne, 193 km away. No regional boundary comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Biodiversity records within roughly six miles include Murray cod, perch, brown trout, Macquarie perch and goldfish. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. At Lake Buffalo the first feature you find is worth twenty minutes.
Long-run averages give February about 20°C and July about 6°C. Fishing runs all year, with summer the awkward season. Summer, December to February, brings heat, so fish the early and late hours. Spring, September into November, fishes hardest, with autumn a close second. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Lake Buffalo.
The access position is unclear from public sources. Being dammed, it draws down in some seasons and fills in others. There is a slipway on the shore, 190 m from the water we list. A picnic area is mapped about 760 m away. Facilities run to toilets 310 m from the water. Rules for this water may differ from the county norm. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. For a change of water, Lake Catani is 13 km distant. Signs at Lake Buffalo carry more weight than any list.
