A clean, cloudless night over the water, with a faint NNE drift with the glass holding level. The water to cover at Lake Bolac is reed fringes and open pockets. Save your energy for the night. Work the productive water thoroughly. Early-season fish sit where winter loosens first.

Victoria holds Lake Bolac, in Ararat. The country round it is pine and hardwood from end to end. Around 12.48 sq km of open water: conditions change from one end to the other. With 18 km or so of shoreline, boat anglers cover ground the bank cannot. It is the biggest water on our Ararat list. Mortlake sits 39 km from the bank. The big place round here is Ballarat, 90 km distant. The nearest boundary is a fair way off.
There is no recorded depth, so work from what you can see. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Species logged nearby in open biodiversity records include perch, shortfin eel, brown trout and golden perch. Protected fish appear in the records for this area, so treat the list as information, not an invitation. At Lake Bolac the first feature you find is worth twenty minutes.
Long-term averages put February at about 19°C and July near 8°C. There is no frozen season to plan round. Spring, September into November, and autumn, March into May, are the strong stretches. April and May steady things again after the summer heat. Lake Bolac fishes to that pattern most years.
No public source sets out the position on this bank. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. There is camping recorded roughly 1.3 km off. There are toilets mapped about 1.3 km away. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Parking is often the real limit rather than the bank itself. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. Whites Lake, 3.5 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Check the current arrangement for Lake Bolac.
