Flat light and a covered sky today, with just enough SSE wind to ripple the surface and pressure sitting still. Whatever swims in Cloister Lagoon should be near banks where bait gets pushed by the flow. An ordinary day throughout, patience over timing. Change depth before you change anything else.

Cloister Lagoon stands in Central Highlands (Tas.), Tasmania. It lies 1,044 metres above sea level. Around 26 hectares of surface means several distinct areas to work. The full circuit measures close to 3.5 km on foot. On size it sits at the modest end of our Central Highlands (Tas.) list. Queenstown is the closest town at 55 km. Sheffield is 57 km and Deloraine 57 km. The nearest boundary is well away, so one set of rules covers the water.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. Reed and marsh margins hold fish through the moving hours. The channel is where water moves, and fish follow it. Species logged nearby in open biodiversity records include Apache trout and rainbow trout. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. Anyone new to Cloister Lagoon should walk it once before setting up.
Seasonal averages run from 2°C in July up to 11°C in February. The freeze here is occasional rather than annual. In a normal year the cover is thin and short-lived. Early spring brings the water on quickly here. It holds true on Cloister Lagoon more years than not. Early and late in the day beat the middle for most of the year.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Access is unmapped, which usually means a farm track and a walk. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. Keep proof of licence with you rather than in the car. Should this one be busy, Lake Myrtle is 1.6 km off. The position on Cloister Lagoon is worth confirming on the day.
